Unsafe tower used to paint IRN-BRU World Cup mural

29/5/26 - Scotland has made it to the World Cup for the first time since 1998, and our Glasgow-based team will be supporting them all the way. And it’s not just us – the whole country has caught football fever. Local soft drink maker IRN-BRU has even arranged for a mural of vice captain John McGinn to be painted on a house in his hometown of Clydebank, using a mobile access tower to work at height.
Unfortunately, while ‘Super’ John McGinn is looking as super as the fans singing his name suggest, we can’t say the same about the tower.
Becoming a top-level footballer takes years of training, practice and dedication to the sport. Similarly, building and using mobile access towers requires training, practice and dedication to safety. Unfortunately, the photos show several issues with the tower, including missing toeboards, incorrectly spaced platforms and guardrails that do not provide collective fall prevention.
As we know, a one-day PASMA Towers for Users course could’ve given the team the knowledge needed to use the tower safely and avoid scoring an own goal. And towers don't need to be made from girders to provide a strong and stable working platform - they just need to be assembled correctly.
We’ve been in touch with IRN-BRU to offer our support with their next mural. We’re sure it’ll look just as good as the first, but it’d be ‘phenomenal’ if the work could be carried out more safely next time.
