Sustainable office renovation puts towers to good use

04/12/2025 - PASMA’s head office in Glasgow has a fresh new look, featuring energy-efficient windows, new carpets and a lick of paint. Doesn’t it look good?

All work at height was completed safely thanks to towers supplied by Andrew Davie and his team at AREA Access.
With ceiling heights of up to five metres, the towers gave contractors safe access to every part of the three-storey office – including the tricky skylight area above the staircase, which no standard tower could safely reach.
As a PASMA hire & assembly member, the AREA Access team is used to tackling awkward access challenges – and of course, they had a solution for this one. They were soon able to produce a design drawing for a bespoke structure that fit the space perfectly.
Using equipment from UTS Sales & Repairs, a PASMA manufacturing member, they assembled the tower and later dismantled it once the painting was complete. It’s all part of their service.

Bespoke tower on our staircase
Because non-standard towers don’t come with an instruction manual, their experienced team, which includes Access Tower Specialists, followed a detailed assembly, use and dismantling plan to ensure safe working throughout.
It’s a great example of how towers can be used safely and effectively for the right task, even when access isn’t straightforward.
Being in a conservation area meant some ideas, such as installing solar panels, weren’t possible. Instead, we focused on the improvements we could make, such as upgrading our electric sockets to remove the need for extension cables and reduce energy use. It follows a series of other recent measures to reduce our scope two emissions, including smart heating and cooling controls and loft insulation.
If you have an awkward access challenge of your own, speak to one of our hire & assembly members.

Sustainable upgrades
As well as decorative work, key upgrades were made with sustainability in mind. PASMA’s building dates back to 1840 and sits within a conservation area, which meant any changes had to respect the character of the surrounding architecture. Our new double-glazed windows were specially chosen to meet those requirements while making our building more energy efficient. We were even able to secure a grant from Business Energy Scotland to help with the costs.

You’re always welcome
Our team worked from home during the renovation and are now back to our normal hybrid routine. Members visiting Glasgow are always welcome to drop by and see our refreshed office in person! Have a look at the finished staircase
